Nordic FinTech: Report Launch Event (April 21, 2021)
In 2020, Nordic tech startups received a record amount of investment. Investment in Nordic tech startups from Japan has been steadily increasing since 2016. Fintech is leading the way.
Innovation Lab Asia has just published a Japanese report “Nordic Fintech”, which summarizes 24 Nordic fintech startups that are particularly keen to enter the Japanese market.

At the beginning of the session, Akiko Shiono from Nordic Innovation House Tokyo gave a general overview of the current status of the Nordic ecosystem in Japan. Oliver Hall from Innovation Lab Asia then gave a presentation on the current high level of investment in Nordic startups from Japan.
Next, Simon Skor of Copenhagen FinTech took the stage. He explained that the organization has 300 members, including financial institutions, startups, and universities, and serves as a gateway for Nordic FinTech to the global market. The reason why they are focusing on Japan is that they recognize that the characteristics of Nordic fintech, such as high awareness of sustainable society, advanced design, and active use of data, are highly compatible with the Japanese market.
Mr. Taketsugu Kito, Vice Chairman of the FinTech Association of Japan, spoke about the association, including its lobbying activities towards industry and policymakers to promote open innovation in financial services, the activities of the 10 subcommittees, and the current status of collaboration with overseas partners.
Takahiro Onodera of DNP spoke about the company’s relationship with fintech, and why they are keen to collaborate with Nordic Fintech startups.

DigiShares integrates blockchain technology with traditional financial instruments to provide a dashboard for issuers and investors to complete financial transactions. In Japan, the company is currently looking for partners to conduct PoC in the real estate industry and with securities companies.

Pie Systems provides tools to simplify the duty-free process for overseas shopping, both for shops and consumers. In Japan, the company is currently looking for retail shops and large malls as strategic partners and is also exploring the possibility of POS integration.

Concordium delivers next-generation blockchain using an innovative protocol-level identity framework. The last test net was released in January this year, and the main net will be launched in June. We are a developer-first company and are currently looking for developers in Japan.

Agroclimatica provides risk management services for agricultural investments and quantifies investment opportunities. Greater Than uses AI to assess the individual risk of drivers and provides premium settings and auto accident compensation forecasting. With only 1 kilometer of driving data, we predict accidents and claim amounts with high accuracy. We have data from 108 countries and obtained seven patents. We are currently recruiting people in Japan.

Following the pitches, we had a Q&A session with live appearances by representatives of each startup.
At the closing of the event, Thomas Kroh Jensen of Copenhagen FinTech gave a speech.” As we have been building relationships with the Japanese market over the past few years, we have seen a high level of interest in Nordic among Japanese stakeholders. We the Nordics also see great potential in the Japanese market. We hope that this year we can see actual partnerships coming true. I look forward to continuing our communication and visit Japan again soon.”
